Licenses are issued by State Governments, not by MAPTA

http://www.pt.mt.gov/MTBOE site

Licenses are issued by State Governments, not local trade association, thus, MAPTA is not the licensing source. However, we are happy to provide you with the links to the resources available to you by the Montana Board of Physical Therapy Examiners, within the State of Montana Department of Labor and Industry. This includes development of rules and regulations for your practice act, which also differs due to legislation in each state.

Click here for the Montana Board of Physical Therapy Examiners. This link will help PT's and PTA's with:

    • General License Information, including exam, renewals and transfers
    • Montana Practice Act
    • Regulations and Administrative Rules - this section will tell you how to obtain and maintain your license, including continuing education requirements.
    • Board members and terms (note: This is different than the MAPTA Board)

Montana Physical Therapy Practice Act

The STATE OF MONTANA requires CEUs to renew one's LICENSE. MAPTA will sponsor programs and endorse programs to help its members reach their CE requirements with the State. Please contact the STATE if you have questions related to acceptance of CEUs.

Common questions on licensing:

Who licenses physical therapists and physical therapist assistants in Montana?
PTs and PTAs are licensed by the State of Montana through the Department of Commerce, Board of Physical Therapy Examiners. As in most states, the professional association (Montana Chapter, in this case) is not the licensing agent. You'll find a link for the Board of Physical Therapy Examiners on this page.

How much continuing education is required for re-licensure in Montana?
PTs and PTAs in Montana are required to have 20 hours of relevant continuing education every two years. Evidence of the completion of the required hours should be submitted with your licensure renewal form and fee TO THE STATE DEPARTMENT. See links above.

How many hours/credits of CE can I submit from online course or videotape?
The Board of Examiners creates the rules for licensing and renewals. Because they have the authority to change these rules, you need to go to their website. Each PT and PTA should be familar with these administrative rules, also found on the website, here: www.pt.mt.gov, click on regulations, then on administrative rules.

Does MAPTA govern the Montana Board of Physical Therapy Examiners?
No, Montana Chapter of American Physical Therapy Association does not govern nor regulate the MT Board of PT Examiners. The MT Board of PT Examiners purpose is to protect the public and they create the legal rules by which physical therapists must comply, as mandated by state legislation. MAPTA can testify on behalf of its members to the Board of PT Examiners at necessary hearings.
